I took this picture (of a portion of the La township) after voting as I drove through the La-Dade-Kotopon constituency last Monday. Just like hundreds of other constituencies, the voters here queued to cast ballots so they can enjoy the very basic essentials of life.

Ghanaians are generally not sophisticated people and their demands are largely basic except for a certain 5-10%. This kind of life will flow from the passage of Laws International Agreements, Bills and others. These legislations are expected to lead to the bettering of their lives in a very efficient manner. That is why the days of ‘hear hear’ when MPs did not read, let alone scrutinize documents before their approval, should now be consigned to history.

My prayer is that members of the incoming Eighth Parliament will appreciate this fact and be solely guided by that in the consideration of everything that is brought before them in the exercise of their legislative functions.

I pray that the next Executive and Parliament will in all sincerity be guided by that wish of DrKofi Busia that,

To every GHANAIAN, a JOB; to every WORK, SECURITY; to every FAMILY, a
DECENT MEAL and a DECENT HOME; to every PERSON, EQUAL OPPORTUNITY and SOCIAL
JUSTICE; to every INDIVIDUAL, THE ESSENTIAL FREEDOM OF SPEECH AND EXPRESSION,
FREEDOM OF MOVEMENT and ASSOCIATION, FREEDOM OF CONSCIENCE OF WORSHIP; and
to all GHANAIANS, PROGRESS.

It is for these that we queue to elect governments and we expect that they will just fulfil this and over 90% of the Ghanaian people will be very happy.
God bless our homeland Ghana and make her great and strong!
